Oct 21, 2013 - Unfortunately, as Paul Thurrott over at WinSupersite mentions, you can't use the ISO to perform a clean install of Windows 8.1 with a Windows 8. FULL Windows 8.1 Profesional X86 Genuine Untouched ISO. Issuu company logo. 3/3 FULL Windows 81 Profesional X86 Genuine Untouched ISO. All pages: 3; Share. My processor is 64-bit, but my current installation of Windows 7 is 32-bit, meaning that trying to upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8 through the upgrade Assistant would give me a 32-bit ISO image, which is not what I want. I want a 64-bit ISO image, so I can at least use my processor and memory to the fullest. May 21, 2018 - As promised by Microsoft yesterday at the //build/conference, the ISO file containing Windows 8.1 customer preview has been released.

Make DVD or USB with the media creation tool: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/create-reset-refresh-media (make sure to select a Windows edition that doesn't have 'N' after it, unless your key is specifically for an N edition.)

If you have a Windows 8.1 key, you can just enter it during installation and skip the following steps, continue with install and setup as normal.
If you only have a Windows 8.0 (or an upgrade or OEM key that doesn't work in the installer dialog box), install with a generic key:
Windows 8.1 Core/Home 334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT
Windows 8.1 Professional XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB
Windows 8.1 Professional XHQ8N-C3MCJ-RQXB6-WCHYG-C9WKB
If you have an N or other edition of Windows 8, find the generic key in the complete list.
Once it's installed: Right click on the start button, click 'Command Prompt (Administrator)'. Type 'slmgr /upk' to get rid of the generic key (it'll pop up with a success box) and then type 'slui 3' to bring up a dialog to enter any Windows 8 or 8.1 key that matches up with the version of Windows you installed. OEM keys, upgrade keys, for both 8.0 and 8.1 should all work.
If your computer came with Windows 8 or 8.1 preinstalled and you need to get your OEM key from the BIOS, follow these steps:
Download this tool: https://github.com/christian-korneck/get_win8key/blob/master/get_win8key.exe (click Raw button to download)
Navigate to where you downloaded it, File->Open Command Prompt->Open Command Prompt, then type get_win8key.exe to run it. It'll give you your key. If it gives you an error, that means you do not have a Windows 8.0 or 8.1 key embedded in the BIOS of your computer. You can now use this key in the previous step to activate Windows.
UPDATE: WINDOWS 10
If you want to update to Windows 10 directly after installation of Windows 8.1 without having to wait for all the updates to install and the upgrade popup to appear, just use this tool to upgrade:
After upgrading to Windows 10, remember to go into Settings and do a full reset (don't keep files, since this is a fresh install anyways and you don't want Windows 8.1 cluttering up the drive).

If you got an ISO from the link above, or just have an ISO or physical DVD, here's how to put it on a 4GB USB drive so it boots in both Legacy and UEFI mode:

2. Start+r, type 'diskpart', press enter. 3. type 'list disk'. It'll show a list of disks attached to the computer. 4. Type 'select disk X', replacing X with the number next to your USB drive in the previous step. 5. Type 'clean' (this will wipe the drive) 6. Type 'create partition primary' 7. Type 'format fs=fat32 quick' 6. Type 'active' 6. Type 'assign' 7. Type 'exit' or close the terminal window. 8. Copy the contents of your Windows ISO or DVD onto the USB drive.

Note that you need a 64-bit ISO if you want to install it in UEFI mode. Either way, you should be installing 64-bit Windows if your computer supports it. Only use the 32-bit ISO if your computer flat out doesn't support 64-bit or if you absolutely need some program that doesn't work with 64-bit Windows for whatever reason. 32-bit ISO's also don't work with 64-bit-only programs, and are limited to 3.5GB of RAM (including shared video memory).
